1. Spark Notes

This should be the secret weapon for all English and English literature students. This online treasure is filled with detailed summaries and analyses of all types of literature. All you need to do is click on the SparkNotes tab and you'll be on your way to understanding novels and plays that you have been wrestling with for far too long.

2. Bon Patron

Not achieving the marks you had hoped for in French class? Well, you'll have your grade heading in the right direction with the help of this handy website. If you're working on a writing assignment and are unsure about whether a sentence or even an entire paragraph is written correctly, go to bonpatron.com, type or paste your text into the field and click on "Check Text." What this site does ishighlight areas that aren't correct, explains what you did wrong and gives you the information you need to make the corrections. It plays the role of an online tutor and is a wonderful teaching tool!

3. Math.com

Boasting practice equations, tutorials, math games and various calculators, Math.com offers help for all levels of math and covers everything from geometry to calculus to trigonometry. The site is constantly being updated to stay current with new math curricula.

4. Rhyme Zone

Sufferers from writer’s block can now rejoice! This rhyming dictionary goes above and beyond to help you find that elusive word. Choose from the many categories that range from basic rhyme to antonyms to only matching specific consonants!Poetry will become a breeze now that you'll be able to rhyme with more ease!

5. Word Reference

Whether you’re studying Spanish, Italian, Korean or Greek, this online translator has everything you'll need for your writing assignments! Equipped with 15 different languages, simply choose the language you desire, type in the word you are struggling with and your problem will be solved in a matter of seconds. Wordreference.com can also conjugate verbs and will be a helpful resource to get you through assignments much quicker, and improve your marks at the same time.

6. Wordle

Want to add a little colour and creativity to a class assignment? Wordle takes any block of text that you enter into the site and arranges the keywords to create a word image. These word images are great ways to spice up a cover page for an essay or project and can even be a nice little visual to include in a PowerPoint presentation. You can also tailor the word image to your liking by changing elements such as colour, font and layout.

7. Skype

Although not really a website, after you download this software you’ll never look back. With its video-calling feature, Skype will make meeting up for group projects a breeze! Instead of having to pack up all the things you’d need for the project and finding a time and place that works for everyone in the group, just get everyone on Skype, have a video conference and all the hassle is taken away. What's better than consulting with your team members from the comfort of your own home? And the best part about Skype is that it’s FREE!!

Blow Pop Martini Jelly Shots, watermelon and sour apple flavors

I blame my current candy-inspired cocktail obsession on Three Olives Bubble Gum Flavored vodka, 100%. Although it is unusual for me to steer towards sweet cocktails, I find myself completely overcome with infatuation for this spirit. I concocted these Blow Pop Martini Jelly Shots for JSTK's TV debut on Twin Cities Live (here's the link to the segment if you would like to watch . . .),
and am eagerly searching for more Bazooka-flavor friendly drinks - if you have any inspiration in this regard, please comment or send me an email!

Blow Pop Martini Jelly Shot

Difficulty:  Easy

Recommended Pan:  flexible silicone mold, small oval savarin shape (24 cavity, I used this one) OR a standard 1 lb loaf glass or non-reactive metal loaf pan (approximately 8" x 4")

Ingredients:

• 1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate (thawed and strained to remove solids)
• 2/3 cup water
• 2 1/2  envelopes Knox gelatin (if not using a mold, decrease to 2 envelopes!)
• 3/4 cup bubble flavor vodka (we used Three Olives brand)
• 1 tbsp Watermelon Pucker liqueur
• 1 tbsp Sour Apple Pucker liqueur
• Lollipop sticks and mini cupcake wrappers for serving, if desired

Prepare the mold by spraying lightly with cooking spray, then wiping the mold cavities clean with a paper towel.  (This will leave a very slight residue which will help unmold the jelly shots, without affecting their taste or appearance.)  No preparation is needed if the jelly shots will be set in a loaf pan.  

Pour lemonade concentrate and water into a small saucepan. Sprinkle with gelatin and allow to soak for a minute or two.  Heat over very low heat, stirring constantly, until gelatin is fully dissolved (approximately 5 minutes). Stir in the vodka. 

Divide the mixture into two bowls. To one bowl add the Watermelon Pucker, to the other, the Sour Apple Pucker.  Pour into molds and chill until fully set, several hours or overnight. 

To serve, unmold.  Cut the lollipop sticks into approximately 1 1/2 inch segments.  Immediately before serving, insert one into each jelly shot and place each jelly shot in a mini cupcake wrapper. 

Yield: 24 jelly shots.

KONY 2012 is an international campaign by Invisible Children, aiming to bring Joseph Kony to justice.

Who is Joseph Kony?

Joseph Kony is the world’s worst war criminal. In 1987 he took over leadership of an existing rebel group and renamed it the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
The LRA has earned a reputation for its cruel and brutal tactics. When Joseph Kony found himself running out of fighters, he started abducting children to be soldiers in his army or “wives” for his officers. The LRA is encouraged to rape, mutilate, and kill civilians–often with blunt weapons.
The LRA is no longer active in northern Uganda (where it originated) but it continues its campaign of violence in Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. In its 26-year history, the LRA has abducted more than 30,000 children and displaced at least 2.1 million people.

What is the goal of KONY 2012?

Invisible Children has been working for 9 years to end Africa’s longest-running armed conflict. U.S. military advisers are currently deployed in Central Africa on a “time-limited” mission to stop Kony and disarm the LRA. If Kony isn’t captured this year, the window will be gone.

We are taking action to ensure these two things:

1) That Joseph Kony is known as the World’s Worst War Criminal.
2) That the U.S. military advisers support the Ugandan Army until Kony has been captured and the LRA has been completely disarmed. They need to follow through all the way and finish what they have started.

Why are we making Joseph Kony "famous"?

Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 campaign aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice. In this case, notoriety translates to public support. If people know about the crimes that Kony has been committing for 26 years, they will unite to stop him.
Secondly, we want Kony to be famous so that when he is stopped, he will be a visible, concrete example of international justice. Then other war criminals will know that their mass atrocities will not go unnoticed or unpunished.

Lofthouse Style Soft Sugar Cookies

I have gotten a few questions from friends and readers about the absence of cookies on our blog. I haven’t posted a cookie recipe since December-gasp! I think that is a record. No, I am not mad at cookies, I was just giving everyone a little time to detox from cookie overload in December. I am back today with my all time favorite sugar cookie recipe. These soft sugar cookies are a copycat of the popular Lofthouse Sugar Cookies that you can buy at the store. Homemade cookies are always best, so skip a trip to the store and make a batch of sugar cookies at home.

These sugar cookies are easy to make. You do have to chill the dough, so make sure you plan ahead. There is sour cream in the recipe which keeps the cookies moist and soft. You can cut the cookies in whatever shapes you like, I chose hearts because Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. The buttercream frosting is fluffy and compliments the cookies nicely. I made pink frosting and added Valentine sprinkles to dazzle up my heart shaped cookies.

These super soft sugar cookies are perfect for any occasion. I usually make them for Christmas and Valentine’s Day. If you like the Lofthouse Sugar Cookies, you will love these.  And remember Valentine’s Day is coming up, I am sure your sweetheart would love a big, soft, fluffy sugar cookie on the day of love. Cookies always make the heart grow fonder:)

 

Lofthouse Style Soft Sugar Cookies

Yield: 5-6 dozen sugar cookies

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 7 minutes

Lofthouse sugar cookies with buttercream frosting. These soft and fluffy sugar cookies are perfect for Christmas, Valentine's Day, or any occasion.

ingredients:

For the Cookies:
6 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1½ cups sour cream

For the Buttercream Frosting:
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
Pinch of salt
6 tablespoons heavy cream

Food coloring, optional
Sprinkles, optional

directions:

1. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; set aside.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated. Add the vanilla extract and sour cream and beat at low speed until combined.

3. Add the dry ingredients and beat at low speed until just combined, scraping down the bowl as needed. Dough will be a little sticky and that is ok. Divide dough into two sections. Flatten into rectangles about 1½ inches thick, then wrap with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator overnight or for at least two hours.

4. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line large baking sheets with parchment paper or Silpats; set aside.

5. Lightly flour the countertop and the top of the dough. With a rolling pin, roll the dough out to ¼-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out the cookies and place on prepared baking sheets. Bake for 7 minutes, until cookies are slightly golden around the edges. Immediately transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool. Cook cookies completely before frosting.

6. To make the frosting, in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and vanilla extract. Slowly beat in powdered sugar and the pinch of salt. Once smooth and creamy, add in heavy cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, then beat at medium-high speed for a minute or two until light and fluffy. Add food coloring, if desired, and beat until combined.

7. Once cookies have cooled completely, frost and add sprinkles, if desired. Allow frosting to set, then store in an air-tight container.
